Speed
Reading rate
The average adult reads 200 to 300 WPM. 400 to 500 is a brisk skim. Above 600, comprehension typically drops.
1 word is the classic RSVP setting. Higher values fixate on short phrases so your eye covers more ground per pause.

How to use
- Paste an article, a chapter, or any block of text into the source text area at the bottom (or click Load sample to try the trainer with a built-in passage).
- Pick a target rate from the WPM presets or drag the slider. Beginners should start within 50 WPM of their current reading rate.
- Adjust the chunk size, font size, theme, and focus highlight to taste, then press Play (or hit Space).
- Use the left and right arrow keys to step back or forward one chunk, drag the position slider to jump anywhere, or press R to restart from the beginning.
- Practice at a rate just above your comfort zone for a few minutes a day; your baseline reading speed will gradually pull up to meet it.
About this tool
Speed Reading Trainer is a free RSVP (Rapid Serial Visual Presentation) reader that flashes your text one word (or a small phrase) at a time in a fixed position, so your eyes stop sweeping across lines and the rate becomes a function of how fast your brain can recognize words. Paste any article, chapter, or note, set a target words-per-minute rate, and press Play. A small colored letter near the start of each chunk marks the optimal recognition point so your eye locks onto a consistent column, which is the same visual trick used by Spritz, Spreeder, Reedy, and BeeLine Reader. Five preset rates cover the practical range (200 WPM casual, 300 average adult, 400 practiced, 500 skim, 700 sprint) and a slider lets you dial in any value between 100 and 1000. Chunk size is adjustable from 1 word (classic RSVP) up to 5 words for multi-word fixations once you are comfortable. Long words automatically get a small extra dwell so a 14-letter word does not flash by in 100 ms, and sentence-ending punctuation (period, question mark, exclamation mark) holds the screen for an extra beat so your brain can close the thought. Three themes (dark, light, sepia) cover the most comfortable backgrounds for short and long sessions, the font size scales from 28 to 96 pixels for any monitor or projector, and the position slider lets you jump back if you missed a passage. Full keyboard support: Space plays or pauses, the left and right arrows step one chunk at a time, R restarts from the beginning, and H toggles the focus highlight. The trainer pauses automatically when the tab loses focus so the position never races ahead while you are looking elsewhere. Useful for practicing a faster baseline reading rate, plowing through a backlog of saved articles, drilling difficult passages by stepping through them slowly, comprehending dense reference material in chunked form, and giving long-form content the same focus that a screen-reader gives audio. The text you paste, the rate you choose, and your position never leave your browser; nothing is uploaded.
