How WPM is measured

Words per minute follow the conventional five-character word, so 250 characters typed in one minute equals 50 gross WPM. Net WPM subtracts one word for every five wrong characters, the same penalty used by most online typing tests. Accuracy divides correct characters by the number of forward keystrokes you made, so corrections still count as effort. The whole test runs in your browser, so the passages and keystrokes you type here never leave your device.

How to use

  1. Pick a test mode: a timed run (15s, 30s, 60s, or 2 minutes) or a single passage that ends when you finish.
  2. Pick a difficulty: Easy lowercase prose, Medium mixed-case prose with punctuation, Hard with numbers and symbols, or Code for programming syntax.
  3. Click the passage block to focus the typing input. The clock starts on your first keystroke and the live counters update as you type.
  4. Watch the live numbers: net WPM, gross WPM, CPM, and accuracy. Mistakes turn rose, correct characters turn emerald, and a blinking caret shows where you are.
  5. When the timer ends or you finish the passage, copy your result summary. Use New passage to try again or Reset test to start fresh.

About this tool

Typing Speed Test is a free, no-signup tool that measures how fast and how accurately you type. Pick a test mode (15-second, 30-second, 60-second, or 2-minute timed runs, or a single passage that ends when you finish typing it) and a difficulty (Easy lowercase prose, Medium mixed-case prose with punctuation, Hard prose with numbers and symbols, or Code with brackets, semicolons, and TypeScript syntax). The passage appears in a fixed monospace block. Click it once to focus the hidden input, then start typing. The clock starts on your first real keystroke, never sooner, so the moment you spend reading the prompt does not count against your speed. Each character you type is compared against the target letter by letter: matched characters turn emerald green, mismatches turn rose, and characters typed past the end of the passage are flagged as extras with a strikethrough so you see exactly where you ran past the line. A blinking caret shows the next character to type. The header counters update in real time with four numbers: net words per minute (the speed you can actually use, with a five-character word penalty for every five wrong characters, the standard typing-tutor formula), gross WPM (raw speed before mistakes), characters per minute (CPM, useful for short bursts), and accuracy (correct characters divided by your total forward keystrokes, so corrections still count as effort). The 15-second, 30-second, 60-second, and 2-minute timed modes auto-extend the passage as you approach the end so you never run out of text mid-test, and the test auto-finishes the moment the timer hits zero. Single-passage mode finishes when you match the last character. When the test ends a result panel breaks down net WPM, gross WPM, CPM, accuracy, correct character count, wrong character count, total keystrokes, and elapsed time, with a one-click Copy result summary button so you can save your number to a notes app, a chat, or a spreadsheet. Difficulty selection cycles through a curated list of passages so you do not get the same prompt twice in a row, and a New passage button reshuffles immediately. The test is useful for warming up before a writing session, learning a new mechanical keyboard layout, practising for a typing speed job test, comparing speeds with a friend, tracking improvement over weeks, picking a comfortable typing target before a long writing day, or just satisfying curiosity about how fast you actually type. Everything runs locally in your browser, so the passages and your keystrokes never leave your device.
