About this tool

Sales Tax Calculator handles both directions of the most common tax math people search for: adding tax to a pre-tax price to find the total, and reversing a tax-included total back to the pre-tax price. Forward mode takes a unit price, an optional quantity, and an optional discount applied before tax (percent off or amount off), then sums one or more stacked rates (for example a state rate, a county rate, and a city rate) into a combined rate, applies it to the post-discount taxable subtotal, and reports the tax and total. Reverse mode takes the tax-included total a customer actually paid plus the combined rate, and divides it back out to the pre-tax price and tax amount, which is useful for receipts, contractor expense reports, VAT extraction, and bookkeeping when only the all-in number is on the slip. Multiple rates are kept separate in the result so the breakdown shows exactly how much went to each line, which matches how invoices and remittance forms expect the math. Money is rounded to the currency's natural minor unit (cents for USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD, INR, TRY; whole units for JPY) using integer-cents rounding to avoid floating-point drift, and amounts are formatted with Intl.NumberFormat for eight currencies for display only (no FX rates, no API calls). Every input runs in your browser, so the prices, totals, and rates you type never leave your device. Useful for shoppers checking the after-tax price before they hit the checkout, freelancers and small businesses adding sales tax or VAT to an invoice, contractors extracting tax from a receipt for an expense report, ecommerce sellers stacking state and local rates, and anyone who needs a fast no-signup answer to either 'how much will this actually cost with tax' or 'how much of this all-in price was tax'.
