About this tool
Inflation Calculator adjusts a money amount across time so you can see what a past dollar is worth today, what a future dollar will be worth at a chosen rate, and the cumulative and annual inflation between two points. By year mode uses US Bureau of Labor Statistics CPI-U All Urban Consumers annual averages (base 1982-1984 = 100) from 1913 to 2024; the equivalent value is amount times the ratio CPI_end divided by CPI_start, the same formula the BLS itself uses on its consumer price index data. By rate mode applies a custom annual inflation rate over any number of years using standard compounding, which is useful for forward projections, for non-US currencies, or for stress-testing a plan against a higher or lower inflation assumption. The result panel always shows the equivalent value, the cumulative inflation as a signed percent, the equivalent annual rate (the geometric mean rate that would produce the same total change), and how much one unit of money at the start year buys at the end year. A year-by-year breakdown table shows how the value drifts over the span; long ranges are sampled at 5 or 10 year intervals so a 100 year span stays readable. Quick presets seed common ranges like 1980, 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2020 to today in one click. A display currency selector formats the output in USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD, JPY, INR, or TRY; the bundled CPI data is US, so foreign currency formatting is a convenience for cross-currency reading, not a foreign inflation index. Useful for setting realistic salary targets, comparing historical prices, sanity-checking retirement plans, evaluating a real return after inflation, or just answering 'what would a hundred dollars in 1980 be today'. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded, no account needed.
