| Brew method | Lighter | Balanced | Stronger |
|---|---|---|---|

| Moka pot | 1:12 | 1:10 | 1:8 |
| Espresso | 1:2.5 | 1:2 | 1:1.5 |
Ratios are weight-based (grams of coffee to grams of water). Espresso uses brew ratio (water out per gram of coffee in), where 1:2 is the modern default.
How to use
- Pick your brew method. The default ratio updates to match a sensible baseline for that method.
- Choose a strength: Lighter, Balanced, or Stronger. The ratio adjusts. Override the ratio at any time by typing 1:16 or any number.
- Pick a mode: From water (you have water, find coffee), From coffee (you have coffee, find water), or From cups (you want N cups, find both).
- Enter the amount and pick a unit. Grams, milliliters, and fluid ounces are supported for water; grams and ounces for coffee.
- Read the recipe panel for the coffee dose, water amount, and ratio. Use the Copy summary button to capture the recipe.
About this tool
Coffee to Water Ratio Calculator turns a brew method and a target strength into the exact gram-perfect recipe you should weigh out: how much coffee to grind, and how much water to pour. Pick from seven brew methods (pour over, French press, AeroPress, drip machine, cold brew, Moka pot, and espresso), each preloaded with sensible lighter, balanced, and stronger ratios (for example, pour over runs 1:14 stronger, 1:16 balanced, 1:18 lighter; the SCA Golden Cup drip target lives around 1:17 to 1:18; French press is typically 1:15; AeroPress sits around 1:15 for the standard recipe; cold brew concentrate ranges 1:5 to 1:12 depending on dilution intent; espresso uses brew ratio 1:1.5 to 1:2.5). Override any preset by typing your own ratio in the familiar 1:16 form or as a single number. Three input modes cover every brew planning question: From water (enter water, get the coffee dose), From coffee (enter the coffee dose, get the water amount), and From cups (enter a number of cups plus a cup size from drip machine 5 fl oz, SCA 6 fl oz, small mug 8 fl oz, standard mug 10 fl oz, large mug 12 fl oz, metric 200 ml, or metric 250 ml). The output shows the coffee dose in grams and ounces with a rough tablespoon equivalent for brewers without a scale, the water amount in grams, milliliters, and fluid ounces, and the exact ratio used. A common-ratios reference table summarizes the lighter, balanced, and stronger weights for every method side by side so you can plan around any preference. The Copy summary button generates a clean recipe block you can paste into a recipe app, a note to a barista, or a brew journal. Useful for dialing in a new bag of beans, scaling a pour over recipe from one cup to a full carafe, prepping cold brew concentrate, planning espresso shots, picking the right drip machine dose, weighing French press coffee for guests, or just answering 'how much coffee per cup of water?' without guessing. All math is local and uses the standard weight-to-weight ratio definition that every modern coffee guide and the Specialty Coffee Association use, so the recipe is repeatable across any kitchen, cafe, or home setup.
