How clothing sizing works

  • Measure, then convertA size label is shorthand for a body measurement range. Tops follow the chest or bust, bottoms follow the waist. Measure once and the labels in every region fall out of that number.
  • US vs UK womenUK women's ready-to-wear runs four numbers above US (a US 8 is a UK 12), while the EU continental scale uses 34, 36, 38 and up.
  • Men's numbers are inchesMen's shirt and trouser numbers are the chest or waist in inches. EU sizing adds roughly 10 to that figure, so a 40 in chest is an EU 50.
  • Vanity sizing is realBrands shift the same label up or down a full size to flatter, and cut differs by garment. Use a brand size guide when one is offered and favour the body measurement over the label.

These charts follow the size guides mainstream international retailers publish. They are a reliable starting point for cross-region shopping, not a guarantee of fit for any single brand.

How to use

  1. Choose what you are sizing: women's tops and dresses, women's bottoms, men's tops and shirts, or men's bottoms.
  2. Pick the system you already know, such as US, UK, EU, IT, the International S/M/L scale, or a body measurement in cm or inches.
  3. Type the size or measurement. Letter sizes like M can match more than one numeric size, and the tool shows the full span.
  4. Read the equivalents panel for every other region, plus the bust, chest, or waist range it was matched to in cm and inches.
  5. Use Copy summary to save the full conversion, and scan the reference chart below for the whole size scale.
  6. When a brand offers its own size guide, prefer it, and favor the body measurement over the label for the best fit.

About this tool

Clothing Size Converter solves the problem that turns up the moment you shop outside your home country: the same garment carries a different number in every region, and the label alone tells you nothing about whether it will fit. This tool fixes that by anchoring every conversion on a body measurement, the only quantity that actually compares across systems. Tops and dresses are sized from the chest (men) or bust (women), bottoms from the waist, so you pick what you are sizing, tell the tool the size you already know in any one system, and it reads off the equivalents in the others. It covers the systems mainstream international retailers publish: the International alpha scale (XS through XXXL), US numeric ready-to-wear, UK numeric (which for women runs four sizes above US, so a US 8 is a UK 12), the EU continental scale (34, 36, 38 and up, shared by France and Germany), and Italian (IT) sizing for women's garments where that system is commonly listed. You can also enter a raw chest, bust, or waist measurement in centimeters or inches and let the tool snap it to the nearest size, which is the most reliable approach because it skips the label guesswork entirely. Letter sizes like M deliberately map to more than one numeric size, and the equivalents panel shows the full span rather than pretending a single number is correct. The result panel reports the matched body measurement range in both centimeters and inches, lists each region's size, and gives a one-click copy summary. Below the converter, a full reference chart for the selected garment lays out the aligned rows so you can scan the whole scale, and a short explainer covers the rules behind the numbers: the barleycorn-free continental step, the US-to-UK women's offset, the inch-based men's chest and waist numbers, and the EU offset of roughly ten. One honest caveat runs through the whole tool: vanity sizing is real. Brands routinely shift the same label up or down a full size to flatter, and cut differs by garment, so these charts are a dependable starting point for cross-region shopping rather than a guarantee of fit for any single brand. When a retailer offers its own size guide, prefer it, and when in doubt favor the body measurement over the label. Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type, including your measurements, is uploaded or sent anywhere.
