Tempo marking
Tap a few times to see the matching tempo marking (Largo, Andante, Allegro and so on).
Closest genre band
The detected BPM is matched against typical hip hop, pop, house, and drum and bass tempos.
Built-in metronome
Pure browser audio. Click Start, then verify the tempo or use it as a practice click.
Note durations and delay times
Set your delay, reverb pre-delay, or LFO rate to one of these values to lock the effect to the groove.
Tap a tempo above or set the metronome to populate the delay-time table.
Genre BPM presets
Tap a preset to load the typical center-of-range tempo for the genre into the metronome.
How the BPM is calculated
- Every tap timestamp is captured in milliseconds. The tool keeps a rolling window of the most recent 16 taps and computes the mean interval between them.
- The mean interval is converted to BPM with the formula60000 / mean(interval_ms), which is the same calculation every tap-tempo plugin uses.
- The stability number is the standard deviation of those intervals. When it drops below about 18 ms, your taps are consistent enough to trust the result.
- A pause longer than 2 seconds since the last tap automatically restarts the window so you can move on to a new song without resetting.
Tap-tempo tips
- Tap on the kick or downbeat for the most stable reading. Snare or hi-hat taps work but are usually higher in subdivision and will read at double or quadruple the song tempo.
- If the result looks too fast (above ~200 BPM), you are probably tapping eighth notes; halve it. If it looks too slow (below ~60 BPM), you may be tapping half notes; double it.
- Aim for at least 8 to 12 taps before locking. The longer the rolling window, the closer the mean lands to the true tempo.
- When you set a delay or reverb effect, dotted-eighth (3/16) is a classic for guitar slap-back; quarter-note for vocals; sixteenth for percussive ducks.
How to use
- Tap the spacebar on every beat of the song (or click the large Tap button). The headline BPM updates after your second tap and keeps refining with every additional tap.
- Watch the Stability number on the right. When it drops below about 18 ms (roughly 8 to 12 consistent taps in), the tempo has locked in.
- Choose how the BPM is rounded with the chips below the controls: Whole BPM for a clean number, 0.1 BPM for a finer reading, or Exact for hundredths.
- Press Lock BPM to freeze the current value, or pause for two seconds to automatically restart the rolling window for a new song.
- Scroll to the note duration table for tempo-synced delay times in milliseconds at every common note value, straight, dotted, and triplet.
- Use the built-in metronome to verify your tap or to practice. Click Use tapped BPM to send the current reading to the metronome, pick an accent pattern, and press Start metronome.
- Click Copy summary to grab the BPM, tempo marking, genre band, beat duration, and the full delay-time table as a clean text block.
About this tool
BPM Tap Tempo is a free in-browser tapper that converts the rhythm of your taps into a precise tempo in beats per minute. Tap the spacebar (or click the big tap button) on each beat of a song; the tool keeps a rolling 16-tap window, computes the mean interval between taps, and turns that into BPM using the standard formula 60000 / mean(interval_ms). Once your tapping settles, the live BPM is displayed alongside a stability number (the standard deviation of your tap intervals, in milliseconds) so you can see when the reading has locked in, and a Lock BPM button freezes the current value for note-taking, sharing, or transferring into a DAW. A long pause (longer than two seconds) automatically restarts the rolling window so you can move from song to song without manually clearing. The result panel surfaces three derived values that producers and engineers reach for every day: the duration of a single beat in milliseconds, the beat frequency in Hz, and a complete note-duration table (whole, half, quarter, eighth, sixteenth, thirty-second) in straight, dotted, and triplet variants. That delay-time grid is exactly what you need to dial a tempo-synced delay, a tempo-synced reverb pre-delay, or an LFO rate that locks to the groove of the track. A built-in metronome generated entirely with the Web Audio API gives you a clean square-wave click with selectable accent patterns from 2/4 to 8/8, an adjustable volume, and one-click loading of the BPM you just tapped, so you can verify your tap and use the metronome as a practice click without leaving the page. Tempo markings from classical notation (Largo, Andante, Moderato, Allegro, Vivace, Presto and the rest) and contemporary genre references (hip hop, pop, house, techno, drum and bass) update live so you instantly see how your tempo compares. Built for DJs trying to beatmatch unmarked tracks, musicians counting in a rehearsal, producers setting delay times, dancers and instructors timing routines, and students of music theory who want a fast, accurate, no-signup tempo tool. Everything runs locally in your browser: the taps, the metronome, and every calculation. No audio is uploaded; the click is synthesized at run time from a short oscillator burst.
