What is the Pomodoro Technique?

The Pomodoro Technique is a time-management method that splits work into focused blocks of usually 25 minutes (a “pomodoro”) separated by short breaks of 5 minutes. After a set of four focus blocks, you take a longer break of 15 to 30 minutes. The structure protects deep work, makes starting easier, and keeps fatigue from creeping into the day. Adjust the focus, short, and long break durations below to whatever rhythm suits the work in front of you, then leave the tab open while you work. The countdown, the audible cue, the tab title, and the block counter handle the rest.

How to use

  1. Click Start (or press Space) to begin a 25 minute focus block. The circular progress ring fills as the phase elapses, and the document title shows the remaining time so the timer stays glanceable from a background tab.
  2. When the phase ends, a short audible cue plays and the next phase begins automatically. Toggle Auto-start next phase off if you want the timer to wait between phases.
  3. Adjust Focus minutes, Short break minutes, Long break minutes, and Focus blocks per long break in the settings panel, or pick a preset like Long focus 50/10/30 or Short sprints 15/3/10.
  4. Use Pause (Space) to interrupt a phase, Skip phase (S) to jump to the next phase without counting it, and Reset phase (R) to restart the current block. Reset session clears the cycle and the focus block counter.
  5. Tabs at the top let you switch directly to Focus, Short break, or Long break. Switching tabs resets the active phase, so a paused focus block becomes a fresh focus block at the configured duration.

About this tool

Pomodoro Timer is a focus-oriented countdown timer that runs entirely in your browser. It alternates configurable Focus blocks with Short Break and Long Break recoveries: by default 25 minutes of focus, 5 minutes off, and a 15 minute long break after every fourth focus block, the classic Pomodoro Technique cadence. Adjust any of the three durations and the long-break interval to match your workload, then leave the tab open while you work. The countdown is anchored against the browser's monotonic clock (performance.now), so it stays accurate even if the tab is throttled, the device sleeps briefly, or the system clock changes, and the time is recomputed from the anchor on every animation frame instead of being decremented step by step. A circular progress ring fills as the active phase elapses; the ring color shifts from rose for focus to emerald for short breaks to blue for the long break, so the current state is readable at a glance. When a phase ends a short two-tone audio cue plays through the Web Audio API (no external sound files), the document title updates with the remaining time and current phase so the timer is glanceable from a background tab, and the next phase auto-starts when auto-start is on or pauses ready for the user otherwise. Skip phase moves forward without counting, Reset phase restarts the current block, and Reset session clears the cycle and the focus block counter. Keyboard shortcuts cover the common actions: Space toggles start and pause, S skips to the next phase, and R resets the current phase. Three quick presets cover Classic 25/5/15, Long focus 50/10/30 for deep work, and Short sprints 15/3/10 for quick momentum. Useful for studying, writing, coding, design work, kanban-style task batching, exam prep, language practice, and any work where a structured rhythm of focus and recovery beats raw willpower. Everything runs locally on your device: no signup, no audio uploads, no analytics tied to your sessions, no synced state.
