How the zodiac is computed

  • Western (tropical): Your Sun sign is the section of the tropical zodiac the Sun occupies on your birthday. Dates follow the modern convention used by the Old Farmer's Almanac and most newspaper horoscopes.
  • Chinese animal: The animal cycle of 12 repeats each year and is anchored at 1900 (Rat). Because the Chinese New Year floats between Jan 21 and Feb 21, the tool uses a verified Chinese New Year lookup table to assign the correct animal to dates near the year boundary.
  • Five elements (Wu Xing): The 10-year element cycle adds Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water, each holding for two consecutive years with Yang (the first year) and Yin (the second). Combined with the 12 animals, the full sexagenary cycle repeats every 60 years.
  • Birthstones and flowers: The birthstone and birth flower for your birth month are the traditional US listings from Jewelers of America and the Old Farmer's Almanac. Several months list two stones because the list has been updated over time.
  • Compatibility: Compatibility callouts are the traditional pairings used in most astrology references (same-element and complementary signs for Western, the four trines for Chinese). They are presented as a cultural reference, not a personality test.
  • Privacy: Every calculation runs in your browser. The date you enter never leaves your device.

How to use

  5. Check the birthstone and birth flower section for the traditional US birth month extras.
  6. Click Copy report to copy a plain-text summary you can paste into notes or share.

About this tool

Zodiac Sign Calculator turns a single date of birth into the full picture of how that date is read by the two most widely searched zodiac traditions. The Western (tropical) Sun sign is detected from the month and day using the modern date ranges used by the Old Farmer's Almanac and most newspaper horoscopes, and the result panel shows the sign name, symbol, element (Fire, Earth, Air, Water), modality (Cardinal, Fixed, Mutable), polarity (Positive or Negative), ruling planet, and a short list of traditional traits. The Chinese zodiac is detected from the year of birth, with a verified Chinese New Year lookup table covering 1900 through 2100 so birthdays in January and early February are assigned to the correct animal across the lunar year boundary. Each animal is paired with its Wu Xing (Five Elements) element and Yin or Yang polarity from the 10-year element cycle that combines with the 12 animals to produce the full 60-year sexagenary cycle. The tool also lists traditional birth month extras, the US birthstone and birth flower for the birth month, and surfaces the four-trine groups used in Chinese astrology and the standard same-element and complementary Western compatibility pairings. A copyable plain-text report gathers everything into a single block that can be saved or shared. Useful for answering search intents like what is my zodiac sign, zodiac sign by date of birth, Chinese zodiac calculator, zodiac sign dates, and birthstone by month.
