YouTube chapter rules cheat sheet

  • The very first timestamp must read 0:00. Without it, no markers.
  • You need at least three timestamps for the chapter UI to appear.
  • Every chapter must run for ten seconds or longer.
  • Timestamps go in order from earliest to latest in the description.
  • Format is m:ss for short videos and h:mm:ss once you cross an hour.
  • One space sits between the timestamp and the chapter title.
  • Place the chapter block anywhere in the description.
  • The last chapter ends when the video ends, so plan that ten second tail.

How to use

  1. Pick a mode at the top: Build for a fresh list, or Parse pasted chapters to edit an existing description block.
  2. Add a row for each chapter and type a time (m:ss or h:mm:ss for videos one hour or longer) and a title. The first row must be 0:00.
  3. Optionally enter the total video length to enable end-of-video validation and to see the duration of the last chapter.
  4. Watch the live checklist and per-row errors. Fix any flagged row so YouTube will show chapter markers when the description is saved.
  5. Click Copy block and paste the result into the description field in YouTube Studio.

About this tool

YouTube Chapter Generator builds the chapter timestamp block that creators paste into a video description so the YouTube player draws interactive chapter markers on the progress bar. The tool follows YouTube's published rules so a missing rule never silently breaks the markers: the first listed timestamp must be 0:00, you need at least three timestamps in total, each chapter must run for at least ten seconds, and timestamps must appear in ascending order from earliest to latest. Type a list of rows with a time and a title, watch live validation flag any row that the player would refuse (bad format, jumps backwards, chapters shorter than ten seconds, missing 0:00 start, empty titles, titles longer than 100 characters), and rearrange rows up and down without breaking ordering. Switch to the parse mode and paste an existing chapter block from another video to edit it in place rather than retyping it row by row. Supply an optional total video length and the validator also warns when a chapter starts after the video ends or when the final chapter would be shorter than ten seconds before the end of the video, and the per-row helper shows the duration of every chapter so a short or oversized section stands out at a glance. The output panel renders the description block exactly as YouTube expects (timestamp, single space, title, one chapter per line) and a Copy button hands you a string ready to drop into the description box in YouTube Studio. Useful for YouTubers structuring long-form videos, tutorial creators, podcast clip uploaders, video editors, course creators on YouTube, video marketers polishing existing uploads, and anyone whose chapters have been silently rejected because the first row was 0:01 instead of 0:00. The widget runs entirely in your browser. No video file is uploaded, no YouTube API call is made, and the chapter list is never sent off your device.
