How the observed date works

Under federal law (5 U.S.C. section 6103), if a federal holiday falls on a Saturday, federal employees observe it the preceding Friday. If it falls on a Sunday, it is observed the following Monday. Holidays that already fall on Monday through Friday are observed the same day. Banks, post offices, and federal offices generally follow the observed date; state and private observances may differ.

How to use

  1. Type a year into the Year field, or use the Previous, This year, or Next year buttons to navigate.
  2. Toggle between Federal observed (the date most offices and banks close) and Calendar date (the statutory date in the United States Code).
  3. Scan the holiday list for each event's weekday, ISO date, and a one-line description of what the holiday marks.
  4. Click Copy as text for a plain list to paste into a doc, email, or HR notice.
  5. Click Download .ics to save an iCalendar file for the year and import it into Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, Outlook, or any other calendar app.

About this tool

US Federal Holidays lists every US federal public holiday for any year you pick from 1971 through 2099 and shows both the statutory calendar date and the federal observed date. The 11 holidays it computes are New Year's Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day (third Monday in January), Washington's Birthday or Presidents Day (third Monday in February), Memorial Day (last Monday in May), Juneteenth National Independence Day (June 19, from 2021 onward), Independence Day (July 4), Labor Day (first Monday in September), Columbus Day (second Monday in October), Veterans Day (November 11), Thanksgiving Day (fourth Thursday in November), and Christmas Day (December 25). For the four fixed-date holidays that can land on a weekend, the federal observance rule in 5 U.S.C. section 6103 is applied: a Saturday holiday is observed the preceding Friday and a Sunday holiday is observed the following Monday. This is the date most federal employees, banks, post offices, and government offices follow for paid time off, so the tool shows it by default and a single toggle switches back to the statutory calendar date. Each entry includes the weekday, the ISO 8601 date, a short description of what the holiday marks, and a relative day count when you are viewing the current year (today, tomorrow, in 12 days, 7 days ago). A summary panel on top shows the total holiday count, how many fall on a weekend in the chosen year, and the next holiday for the current year. The whole list is also available as plain text and as a downloadable .ics (iCalendar RFC 5545) file you can import into Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, Microsoft Outlook, Fastmail, Notion Calendar, or any other client that reads .ics. The .ics output uses all-day VEVENTs with the date you have selected (observed or calendar), TRANSP:TRANSPARENT so the days do not block your free/busy, and a stable per-holiday UID so reimporting the same year overwrites cleanly. All date math runs locally in your browser, so nothing about the year you are planning leaves your device.
