Steps to Distance Calculator
Convert steps to miles, kilometers, meters, feet, or yards in your browser. Bi-directional with stride from height, activity profile, time, and calories.
Direction
Convert a step count from a fitness tracker into miles, kilometers, meters, feet, or yards.
Determines cadence (110 steps per minute), MET (3.5), and the default stride multiplier.
Stride
Distance in every unit
10,000 steps at 71.7 cm per step.

Stride length reference
Typical walking stride at moderate pace, estimated as roughly 0.415 of standing height. Pick the row closest to your height as a starting point, then refine with your fitness tracker if you have a calibrated stride.

Calculations run in your browser. Stride length, cadence, MET values, and the calorie estimate are based on widely cited gait research and the 2011 Compendium of Physical Activities. Real-world results vary by terrain, fitness, posture, footwear, and individual gait. The calorie figure is an estimate, not a measured value.
How to use
- Pick a direction at the top: Steps to distance for converting a step count, or Distance to steps for the reverse.
- Enter your step count (with quick presets like 5,000, 10,000, and 15,000) or your distance with a unit (mi, km, m, ft, yd) and presets like 1 mile, 5K, or marathon.
- Choose the activity that matches your effort (slow walk, moderate walk, brisk walk, jog, or run) so the stride multiplier and cadence are right.
- Set the stride source. Estimate from height enters your height in ft/in or cm and uses the activity's stride multiplier. Enter my stride lets you paste a calibrated stride from your tracker in inches, centimeters, or meters.
- Optionally enter your body weight to add an estimated calorie burn using the MET method, and copy the summary or any individual row for your log or message.
About this tool
Steps to Distance Calculator turns a step count from a pedometer, smartwatch, or fitness app into a real distance in miles, kilometers, meters, feet, or yards. It works in both directions: enter steps to see how far you went, or enter a distance to see how many steps it takes. Stride length, the heart of the math, can come from three sources: enter your stride directly (best when you have a calibrated value from your tracker), estimate it from your height using widely cited gait research (roughly 0.41 to 0.55 of standing height depending on whether you are walking slowly, walking briskly, jogging, or running), or fall back to a typical adult average. The Activity selector switches between five profiles (slow walk, moderate walk, brisk walk, jog, and run), each with its own stride multiplier, cadence in steps per minute, and MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) value sourced from the 2011 Compendium of Physical Activities. From the chosen activity and your step count the tool also estimates how long the activity takes (steps divided by cadence) and, when you enter a body weight, an approximate calorie burn using the standard MET equation (gross kcal = MET x kg x hours) with a separate net-above-resting figure shown for transparency. A live conversions table shows the same result in every common distance unit, and a stride-length reference table lists typical walking stride, steps per mile, and steps per kilometer for heights from 5'0" to 6'4" so you can cross-check at a glance. Common step targets like 5,000, 8,000, 10,000, 12,000, 15,000, and 20,000 are one tap away, and so are 1 mile, 1 km, 5K, 10K, half marathon, and marathon distances. Useful for anyone tracking daily step goals, planning a walk or run to hit a fitness target, comparing tracker readings between devices, or making sense of public health step recommendations. Everything runs locally; the steps, height, weight, and stride you enter never leave your browser.
