How grade conversion works

  • Percentage is the anchorEvery scale is derived from one percentage value, so converting a GPA to a percentage and back stays consistent instead of drifting between mismatched tables.
  • GPA to percentage is a rangeA 4.0-scale point covers a band of percentages (a B is 83 to 86%), so a GPA or letter input reports a typical percentage for that band rather than a single exact score.
  • Plus and minus scaleThe letter and GPA columns use the standard US plus and minus scale, where an A- is 3.7 and a B+ is 3.3. Many schools cap the unweighted GPA at 4.0, so A+ and A share 4.0 here.
  • International equivalentsUK honours, the German 1.0 to 5.0 scale, and ECTS grades are shown as approximate references. They depend on the institution and the cohort, so confirm the official mapping when you apply.

This converter uses widely published mappings and is a reliable starting point for understanding a grade across systems. It is not an official transcript evaluation.

How to use

  1. Choose what you already have: a percentage, a GPA on the 4.0 scale, or a US letter grade.
  2. Type the value, such as 85, 3.5, or B+. The other scales update automatically as you type.
  3. Read the converted GPA, letter grade, and percentage, with the percentage band shown for context.
  4. Check the approximate UK, German, and ECTS equivalents below the main result if you are applying internationally.
  5. Use Copy summary to grab a plain text version, or Clear to reset and Load example to see a worked conversion.

About this tool

GPA to Percentage Converter turns any single grade into the three scales students reach for most: the United States 4.0 grade point average, a percentage score, and the plus and minus letter grade. It works in every direction. Enter a percentage and it returns the matching GPA and letter, enter a 4.0-scale GPA and it returns the letter and a typical percentage range, or enter a letter grade such as B+ and it returns the GPA and percentage band. The conversion is built on a single anchor value, the percentage, so the three scales always stay consistent with each other rather than each pair relying on its own mismatched table. The letter and GPA columns follow the standard United States plus and minus scale that most institutions publish, where an A- is 3.7, a B is 3.0, and a B+ is 3.3, and where the unweighted GPA is capped at 4.0 so an A and an A+ share the same grade point. Because a single GPA point or letter actually spans a band of percentages, for example a B covers roughly 83 to 86 percent, a GPA or letter input reports a representative percentage for that band together with the full range, which is the honest way to express a conversion that is genuinely one to many. Alongside the United States result the tool shows approximate international equivalents that applicants frequently need: the UK undergraduate honours classification (first, upper second, lower second, third), the German scale from 1.0 at the top to 5.0 at the bottom calculated with the widely used modified Bavarian formula, and an ECTS style grade from A to F. These international mappings are clearly labelled as approximate because they depend on the institution and the cohort, so the tool guides without pretending to be an official transcript evaluation. A live reference chart shows the whole letter, GPA, and percentage scale with the row that matches your current conversion highlighted, and a copy button produces a clean plain text summary. Everything is computed in your browser, so the grades you enter are never uploaded.
