Final Grade Calculator

Find the score you need on your final to hit a target course grade. Uses your current grade and the final's weight, with a table of letter targets.

The grade you have in the class so far, as a percent.

How much the final is worth in the overall course grade.

The course grade you want to finish with.

How the math works

Your course grade is a weighted average. If the final is worth 30% of the total course grade, then the work you have already done is worth 70% of it.

Course grade formula

course = current * (1 - w) + final * w

Score you need on the final

final = (target - current * (1 - w)) / w

Where current is your current grade, target is the course grade you want, and w is the weight of the final as a decimal between 0 and 1.

How to use

  1. Type your current grade in the class as a percent (for example 82 for an 82%).
  2. Type the weight of the final in the overall course grade (for example 30 if the final is 30% of the course).
  3. Type the target course grade you want to finish with, or click a quick target like A, B, or C.
  4. Read the headline result for the score you need on the final to reach that target.
  5. Check the table to see what you would need for every common letter grade, with a status badge for each.
  6. Look at the range of outcomes to see the highest and lowest possible course grades after the final.
  7. Click Copy report to save the breakdown for a study plan, a screenshot, or a message to a study partner.

About this tool

Final Grade Calculator answers the question every student asks before finals week: what score do I need on the final to finish the course with the grade I want? Type your current grade in the class, the weight of the final exam in the overall course grade, and the target course grade you want to hit. The tool computes the score you need on the final using the same weighted-average math your teacher uses: target equals current times one minus weight, plus final score times weight. It also shows your best possible course grade (a 100 on the final), your worst possible course grade (a zero on the final), and a full table of letter-grade targets from A down to D-minus with the score required for each on the standard US plus or minus scale. Each row is tagged Already locked in when the target is already secure, Achievable when the required score is reasonable, Borderline when you need above 90 on the final, or Not reachable when even a perfect final cannot get you there. Useful when you want to know how hard to study, whether you can skip the final and still pass, what a realistic A target looks like, or how much one exam can move your grade either way. Everything runs in your browser; the grades you type here never leave your device.
