Waist-to-Hip Ratio Calculator
Calculate your waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and waist-to-height ratio in your browser. WHO risk bands, body shape, healthy waist range, metric or imperial.
Unit system
Measurements in centimeters.
Sex (for risk thresholds)
The WHO uses different healthy thresholds for adult men and women.
Quick samples
Measure around the narrowest point above the navel.
Measure around the widest part of the hips.
Used to compute your waist-to-height ratio.
WHR bands (women, WHO classification)
Below 0.80
Healthy range. WHO low-risk band for women.
0.80 to 0.85
Moderate range.
0.85 to 0.90
Increased risk band.
Above 0.90
Substantially increased risk. Apple shape.
Bands follow the World Health Organization 2008 expert consultation report for adults. Different populations and ethnic groups can carry slightly different healthy thresholds.
WHtR bands (Ashwell rule of thumb)
Below 0.40
Below the healthy band.
0.40 to 0.49
Healthy waist-to-height ratio.
0.50 to 0.59
Increased risk band.
0.60 or higher
Substantially increased risk band.
The Ashwell rule of thumb says to keep your waist below half your height. It works for both men and women and from school age upward.
Important
Waist-to-hip ratio is a population-level screening number, not a medical diagnosis. It does not capture muscle mass, bone structure, ethnicity, or individual health context, and it is not a substitute for advice from a qualified clinician. Use the result as a general orientation point and talk to a doctor for a personal assessment.
How to use
- Pick a unit system: Metric (cm) or Imperial (in), and pick your sex so the calculator uses the right WHO risk thresholds.
- Measure your waist around the narrowest point above the navel, your hips around the widest part, and your height standing barefoot. A flexible tape measure works best.
- Type the three numbers into the input panel. The calculator updates live as you type and shows clear errors for impossible values.
- Read your waist-to-hip ratio at the top of the Result panel, your body shape (slim, pear, hourglass, or apple), and your waist-to-height ratio with its own risk band.
- Compare your waist to the healthy waist range printed for your height (0.40 to 0.49 of height), and use Copy summary to share the full breakdown or Copy WHR to grab the headline value.
About this tool
Waist-to-Hip Ratio Calculator works out your waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and, as a bonus, your waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) from three measurements you can take with any tape measure: waist circumference, hip circumference, and height. The WHR is reported with the World Health Organization 2008 expert-consultation risk bands, which use different thresholds for adult men and women: men sit in the healthy band below 0.90, the moderate band between 0.90 and 0.95, the increased risk band between 0.95 and 1.00, and the substantially increased risk band above 1.00, while women sit in the healthy band below 0.80, the moderate band between 0.80 and 0.85, the increased risk band between 0.85 and 0.90, and the substantially increased risk band above 0.90. The tool also classifies your body shape (slim, pear, hourglass, or apple) from your WHR and WHtR, and shows the healthy waist circumference range for your height using the Ashwell rule of thumb that says to keep your waist below half your height. A unit toggle preserves your numbers when switching between centimeters and inches, presets seed realistic samples in one click, and the equations panel shows the exact WHR and WHtR fractions in your active unit system so the result is transparent. Useful for tracking fitness progress beyond the scale, comparing the metabolic-risk picture from WHR with the older BMI score, sanity-checking a waist measurement before buying clothes, or simply answering the everyday "is my waist a healthy size for my height" question with real WHO and Ashwell guidance. Waist-to-hip ratio is a population-level screening number, not a medical diagnosis. It does not capture muscle mass, ethnicity, bone structure, or individual health context. For a personal health assessment, talk to a qualified clinician. The math runs entirely in your browser, so the measurements you type stay on your device.
