Per-paragraph breakdown

One row per paragraph. Use it to spot heavy paragraphs (many sentences) and light ones (a single sentence carrying a whole section).

Paste some text above to see the per-paragraph breakdown.

How to use

  1. Paste or type your text into the input area. Use Load sample if you want to see how the breakdown looks on a short passage.
  2. Read the Live counts panel for paragraphs, sentences, words, characters, sentences per paragraph, and words per sentence (with median).
  3. Scan the Longest sentences card to find long sentences you may want to split. Scan Shortest sentences to spot fragments or unintended one-word lines.
  4. Check the Per-paragraph breakdown table to see sentence, word, and character counts for every paragraph in order.
  5. Use Copy summary to copy a plain-text report you can paste into notes or share with an editor.

About this tool

Sentence and Paragraph Counter is a focused stats tool for two questions the generic word counter answers crudely: how many sentences your text contains, and how many paragraphs. It uses an abbreviation-aware sentence detector that recognizes the common words that end with a period without ending a sentence (Mr., Mrs., Dr., e.g., i.e., U.S., a.m., p.m., and dozens more) plus periods inside numbers (3.14, 1,000.50) and version strings (v1.2.3). Paragraphs are blocks separated by one or more blank lines, which matches how Markdown, plain text, and most word processors define them. Beyond the totals, the tool reports average and median words per sentence, average sentences per paragraph, characters per sentence, and a short list of the longest and shortest sentences so you can find candidates to split or rewrite. A per-paragraph table shows sentence, word, and character counts for every paragraph in your draft. The text is processed entirely in your browser; it is never uploaded.
