ISO and ANSI cheat sheet

The ISO 216 A series starts at A0 (841 x 1189 mm) and halves the long edge at each step. The long-to-short ratio is the square root of 2 (about 1.414), which is why halving an A4 sheet produces two A5 sheets without leftover paper.

The B series (B0 is 1000 x 1414 mm) sits between adjacent A sizes, so B5 is bigger than A5 but smaller than A4. Common uses: books and passports (B7 is the ICAO passport size).

The C series (ISO 269) is for envelopes. A C5 envelope holds an A4 sheet folded once. A C6 envelope holds an A4 sheet folded twice or an A6 postcard flat.

In the United States and Canada the office page is Letter (8.5 x 11 in). Tabloid (11 x 17 in) and its landscape twin Ledger (17 x 11 in) are common for newspapers, drawings, and printer spreads. ANSI A through E continues the doubling pattern from ANSI/ASME Y14.1.

How to use

  1. Pick Pick a standard size, then tap a category (ISO A, ISO B, ISO C, ANSI/US, Envelopes, or Photo prints) and the size you need.
  2. Or pick Enter a custom size and type a width and height in mm, cm, inches, points, picas, or pixels.
  3. Switch between Portrait and Landscape for ISO and ANSI sheets when the orientation matters.
  4. Set the pixel DPI: 72 or 96 for screens, 150 to 200 for posters, 300 for photo prints, 600 for fine art, or type any custom 1 to 2400 value.
  5. Copy a single unit row, or use Copy summary to grab the full mm, cm, in, pt, pc, and px breakdown as plain text.

About this tool

Paper Size Converter looks up the exact dimensions of the paper, envelope, and photo print sizes designers, printers, and office users hit every week and reports each one in millimeters, centimeters, inches, PostScript points (1 in = 72 pt, the unit PDF and InDesign use), picas (1 in = 6 pc), and pixels at a DPI you pick. The full ISO 216 A series (A0 through A10, plus the 2A0 and 4A0 extensions), the ISO 216 B series (B0 through B10, including the B7 passport size), the ISO 269 C envelope series, the North American ANSI/US set (Letter, Legal, Junior Legal, Tabloid, Ledger, Executive, and the ANSI A through E drawing series), the common business and invitation envelopes (DL, C4, C5, C6, B5 catalog, US #6 3/4, US #9, US #10, US #11, US #12, US #14, plus the social A2, A6, A7, A9 envelopes), and the photo lab print sizes from wallet through 24 x 36 in are all built in, each with a one-tap button. Pick a size, choose portrait or landscape, set the DPI (72 for screens, 96 for Windows scaling, 150 to 200 for posters, 300 for photo prints, 600 for fine art, or any custom 1 to 2400 DPI), and the conversion table updates instantly. A live-scaled preview rectangle draws the chosen size next to an A4 page outline so you can see the size difference without measuring. A custom-size mode goes the other direction: type a width and height in mm, cm, inches, points, picas, or pixels, and the tool reports the value in every other unit, which is the answer to questions like 'what is 1080 x 1920 pixels in inches at 300 DPI', 'how many points wide is a US Letter PDF', or 'what does my 16:9 thumbnail measure in centimeters at 96 DPI'. All conversions use exact factors (1 inch = 25.4 millimeters, 1 inch = 72 PostScript points, 1 inch = 6 picas) drawn from ISO 216, ISO 269, ANSI/ASME Y14.1, and the published USPS envelope sizes, so the values match what print shops, paper merchants, and PDF tools quote. A summary copy button drops the full set of unit values into your clipboard as plain text ready to paste into a brief, a spec, or a chat. Useful for picking the right page setup for a brochure, sizing a poster for the right paper, confirming what 'A4 in pixels' really means at 300 DPI, picking an envelope that fits the sheet you printed, planning a photo print, exporting a PDF at the right point size, sanity-checking a print quote, or quickly answering the question 'how big is X paper' without flipping through a reference book. Every conversion runs locally in your browser; the size you pick or type here is never uploaded.
