How to use
- Start typing in the editor. Every keystroke is saved to this browser within a fraction of a second; the green Saved label confirms the write.
- Click + New page to create another named page. Use the page tabs at the top to switch between pages without losing any content.
- Click Rename to change the active page name. Names are kept unique automatically if you reuse one.
- Click Download .txt to save the active page as a plain text file, or Download all pages to export every page joined into a single .txt file. Use Copy page text to put the active page on your clipboard.
- Use Clear this page to empty only the active page, Delete page to remove it (the last remaining page always stays in place), or Clear all pages to reset the notepad to a single fresh page.
About this tool
Online Notepad is a free, autosaving writing surface that lives entirely in your browser. Open the page, start typing, and the text is preserved on this device so the same notes are still there when you reload the tab, restart the browser, or come back tomorrow. No signup, no account, no cloud, no email. The notepad keeps multiple named pages side by side (up to ten), each with its own text and its own last-saved timestamp, so you can keep a meeting log, a draft reply, a shopping list, a research dump, and a list of prompts open at once and switch between them with a single click. The pane on the right shows live counts of words, characters, characters without spaces, lines, sentences, paragraphs, and an estimated reading time based on 225 words per minute, so the same surface that holds your notes also tells you how long the draft is. Each page is a plain text editor, not a rich text or markdown renderer, which makes it the right tool for shopping lists, journal entries, draft messages, scratch math, daily logs, idea capture, research notes, ChatGPT prompts, code snippets that should not be reformatted, paragraphs you are still editing, and anything you want to type and keep without setup. Persistence uses window.localStorage with a debounced write so heavy typing stays smooth; the data lives only on this device and can be cleared with the Delete page or Clear all pages buttons or by clearing your browser's site data for this site. Each page can be renamed inline, copied to the clipboard with one click, or downloaded as a .txt file (a single page, or every page joined into one export). Because storage is per-device and per-browser, the same notepad opened on a phone, a tablet, or another laptop starts empty there; this is intentional and is what makes the tool work with no signup. Useful when a clean blank text area beats opening a heavy desktop app, when you do not want to make an account on a notes service just to scratch out a paragraph, when you need to type and walk away without losing it, when you are sketching a reply before pasting it into an email, when you are taking notes on a phone call, or when you want a fast in-browser draft pad that you can copy from at the end.
