Data Transfer Cost Calculator

Estimate cloud egress and bandwidth cost from a data volume and a price per GB. Add a free allowance and project monthly. Provider rate presets included.

Price presets (approximate list rates)

These are rounded published list prices for outbound transfer to the internet, used to prefill the price field. Real pricing varies by region, monthly tier, and commitments, so confirm against your provider before relying on a number.

How data transfer billing works

  • Most clouds charge for data leaving their network (egress) and usually not for data coming in (ingress). Serving downloads, API responses, video, and images to users is the part that shows up on the bill.
  • Pricing is almost always quoted per GB, and a GB here means the decimal gigabyte of 1,000,000,000 bytes, the same convention used to label drives and bandwidth.
  • Many providers include a small free monthly allowance and price the first paid tier highest, with the rate stepping down at higher monthly volumes. This tool uses one flat rate, so for tiered pricing run it once per tier and add the results.
  • A CDN, a flat-rate VPS bandwidth pool, or an egress-free object store can change the math entirely. Set the price to match the plan you actually use.

All figures are estimates calculated in your browser from the numbers you enter. Nothing is uploaded. Confirm against the current pricing from your provider before committing a budget.

How to use

  1. Enter the amount of data transferred and pick its unit, from megabytes up to petabytes, or a binary unit like GiB if that is how your figure is reported.
  2. Type the price per GB, or tap a provider preset such as AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, or CloudFront to prefill an approximate list rate.
  3. Choose a currency symbol for display if you want one. The calculation uses whatever price number you enter.
  4. Add a free monthly allowance in the chosen unit if your plan includes one, so the tool charges only the billable remainder.
  5. Set the number of months to project a single month's cost across a longer budgeting period.
  6. Read the cost, the total, free, and billable breakdown, and the equivalent rate table, then copy the cost or the full summary. Everything is calculated in your browser.

About this tool

Data Transfer Cost Calculator turns the two numbers on every cloud bandwidth line item, a volume of data and a price per gigabyte, into a clear cost estimate you can plan around. Cloud providers, content delivery networks, and hosts charge for data leaving their network, called egress, and the rate is almost always quoted per GB, so the core arithmetic is simple: multiply the billable gigabytes by the price per GB. The tool makes that arithmetic exact and transparent so the result is easy to check against a real invoice. You enter how much data you transfer, choose the unit (MB, GB, TB, or PB on the decimal scale, plus MiB, GiB, and TiB on the binary scale for when a figure is reported in gibibytes), type the price per GB, and read the cost instantly. A gigabyte here means the decimal gigabyte of 1,000,000,000 bytes, the same convention drives and bandwidth are labelled with and the unit nearly every price sheet quotes, while the binary units convert cleanly into it so a value pulled from a system that reports GiB still gives the right answer. Two extras match how these bills actually work. A free allowance field subtracts an included monthly amount before charging, since several providers bundle a small free tier, and the tool reports how much that allowance saves. A months field projects a single month's cost across a longer period for annual budgeting. The result panel breaks the estimate into total transfer, free allowance, billable transfer, and the projected total, and an equivalent rates table restates the same price per MB, per 100 GB, per TB, and per PB so you can reconcile a quote given at a different volume. Price presets prefill the field with rounded published list rates for common services, including AWS data transfer out, Google Cloud and Azure egress, a CloudFront CDN rate, and lower-cost or egress-free options like Cloudflare R2, Backblaze B2, DigitalOcean, and Vultr, as a convenient starting point rather than a live quote. One thing to keep in mind: real pricing is frequently tiered, with the first paid GB priced highest and the rate stepping down as monthly volume grows, and it varies by region and by any committed-use discounts. This calculator applies one flat rate, which is exactly right for a single tier or a flat-rate plan; for tiered pricing, run it once for each tier's volume and rate and add the results. The presets are rounded and not a price feed, so always confirm the current figure with your provider before committing a budget. Everything is computed locally in your browser with plain multiplication. The volume, price, and allowance you type are never uploaded, never logged, and never leave your device.
